Kitchen Units & Cabinets

There's little point in considering installing a large island unit if your space is long and narrow. But whatever the size, it's important to make your new kichen as efficient to use as possible..

If you're lucky, you'll have a large square room which will be relatively easy to plan. However, most rooms are either:

  • Galley - cabinets fitted along one wall
  • Two-Way Galley - cabinets fitted along two walls opposite each other
  • L-Shaped - cabinets fitted along two walls and joined together at one corner
  • U-Shaped - cabinets fitted along three walls

Kitchen units can be either Fitted or Free-Standing.

Fitted Kitchen units do make the most of available space, as the cabinets conceal the corners, whilst using the space for storage. There's a huge range of units to suit - flat pack, chipboard, solid wood, stainless steel - for every taste and every pocket. However, it's generally thought that a fitted kitchen will add value to your home. This is not necessarily the case, as a lot of new owners tear out the kitchen in their newly-aquired property as their first job!

Pilkington's of London Kitchen Cabinets

Free-Standing kitchen units enable the creation of a more individual look because you mix and match furniture and kitchen cabinets to create the style and ambiance you desire. It's also more flexible if you fancy a change - just move units and furniture around. Also, when you move, you kitchen can go with you! But the downside is that Free-Standing kitchens don't utilise space as well as fitted kitchens and cleaning is often more difficult.
