Kitchen Sinks

It's been calulated that of all the time you spend in the kitchen, something approacing 50% of that time will be spent bent-over the kitchen sink - so it's advisable to consider this fact when making your purchase!

There are three recognised formats:

  • Self-Rimming - where the sink sits snugly in a matching profile (hole) cut into the worktop
  • Undermounted - where the sink is fixed underneath the worktop
  • Integral - where the sink is made of the same material as the worktop

Materials

Stainless Steel is the most popular choice. It's low maintenance, lasts more or less indefinitely and is available in a huge choice of pre-formed styles and price-ranges. Choose metal that is as thick as you can afford and with good insulation underneath - then it won't sound tinny.

Composite Sinks - are now very popular, being fabricated by mixing different substances together such as quartz and granite, in order to get a finished product which is very hardwearing material. They don't scratch, chip or crack easily because the atural stone is mixed with tough resins. Acrylic sinks can look similar (often shinier), are not as tough, but they are more affordable.

Ceramic Sinks - traditional, or Country Style kitchens often require ceramic sinks which have a smooth and very hard glazed surface. This is the traditional material of which the (now popular once more) Belfast sink is made. But, it should be remembered that the ceramic material from which they are made is very thick, heavy and expensive.

Cast Iron - kitchen sinks have a porcelain finish which is fired on and so is literally 'welded' to the metal. They come in a wide range of colours. Incredibly durable, they so hard that it's easy to break fragile china and glass on the sides.

Enamelled Steel - is a less-expensive alternative and was the often norm whilst stainless steel was the expensive option. The enamel less durable than cast-iron sinks and designs tend to be limited these days.

Natural Stones & Granite - or for something different, Copper, Brass, Wood and Concrete are all materials out of which sinks are made. But they're often only made to order and so therefore expensive.
